This past week was kind of a hectic one so my plans for getting a few more blog posts up were foiled. So here is my reliable recap of my weekend…
Fridays used to be pretty relaxed but it seems they are packed full of commitments. I started out the day with formatting and turing in my first comprehensive exam! (cue celebratory music). It felt pretty good to turn it in but I also felt a bit nauseous. I feel really good about the work I did and I just hope my committee feels the same. I always am more nervous for work I feel happy with. Then we I had two back to back meetings and class. After class I had to hurry home, let Linus out, and head to Topeka. I was going to the Kansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s annual conference and needed to be there by 5 to attend the poster session. After the posters the group I was presenting with headed to the Pizza Pub and Dairy Queen, we had a lot of fun together. It was kind of special because one of our presenters was an 18 year old young adult with Down syndrome, we can call her S. The presentation was about her and how the model of inclusion has helped her lead a life full of opportunity. We all stayed together in the hotel and practiced our talk that evening.
We woke up bright and early, and started to get ready. S was probably not used to getting up so early (ya know teenagers!) and was pretty slow moving. We ended up having a lot of time to kill before our talk which made me kind of anxious. I don’t think I will ever stop getting nervous before talking in front of a group. Our presentation went perfectly and I think that everyone really enjoyed it. I headed to my mom’s afterwards. I spend some time with her, ate lunch, and headed out for the 5 miles that was on my plan. I ended up running faster than I have run in awhile which was a huge boost to my confidence. My whole philosophy through this training has been slow and steady, I really just want to finish, but sacrificing my speed has made me feel pretty bummed out. So this was a solid run that I felt really good about. After I got home, we had to get ready to go to the Washburn University football game. My sister is the drum major of the band and S is in the band too! They were having their first home game and I didn’t want to miss it. My mom and I enjoyed the game. It is really starting to cool down here (bring on Fall!) and it was a beautiful evening for a football game.
Well…hmm…yeah so I woke up at 5:15 AM. Made my peanut butter toast, sat on the couch and tried and tried to talk myself into going on my run. I just couldn’t. I was bargaining up a storm and there was just no way I was getting out there, so I crawled back in bed for another three hours. Apparently, I was tired. After a few hours of doing not to much I had to take my mom to the airport. My sister came along and afterwards we went out to lunch and did a bit of shopping. I had every intention of getting my run on but it just didn’t happen. I’m not sure what that means. I’m trying not to stress about it too much, I know I will be ok come marathon day but skipping long runs is probably not the best idea. I only have few more weeks left and I plan on finishing it strong. We spent the afternoon and evening watching Homeland Season 2, I am seriously addicted. If you’ve never watched any of it, I highly recommend it.
And that wraps up another weekend. I’m hoping to start working on another blog post right now so I have something to post tomorrow. We will see.
